We who love books
ਅਸੀਂ ਜੋ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ

Read the following stanzas and answer the questions: –
A. Some books I’ll never give away,
The old and worn, their binding torn,
Upon my shelves they’ll always stay,
Alive, still read, still fresh each dawn,
their magic moments never gone.
a) Name the poem and the poet. ਕਵਿਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਕਵੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਲਿਖੋ।

b) The poet doesn’t want to part with some books. Where does he keep them? ਕਵੀ ਕੁਝ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ। ਉਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ?
Ans. He keeps them upon his shelves. ਉਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ੈਲਫਾਂ ਤੇ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
c) What is the condition of the books? ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਦੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਹੈ?
Ans. Books are old and worn out. Their binding is also torn.
ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਪੁਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਘਸੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਿਲਦ ਵੀ ਫਟੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
B. Familiar friends, these timeless tales,
Have been with me since I was ten,
And as I turn their pages once again,
I feel and love their old refrain.
a) The poet calls his books ‘familiar friends’. Why does he call them ‘familiar’? ਕਵੀ ਆਪਣੀਆ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਨੂੰ ‘ਜਾਣੇ-ਪਹਿਚਾਣੇ ਦੋਸਤ’ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ‘ਜਾਣੇ- ਪਹਿਚਾਣੇ/ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਕ‘ ਕਿਉਂ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ?
Ans. Because the books have been with him since he was ten years old.
ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਉਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਹਨ, ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਦਸ ਸਾਲ ਦਾ ਸੀ।
b) What do you understand by the phrase ‘timeless tales’?
‘ਸਦੀਵੀਂ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ‘ ਵਾਕੰਸ਼ ਤੋਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੀ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹੋਂ?
Ans. It means that the stories of the books are alive for all ages.
ਇਸਦਾ ਭਾਵ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਮਿਆਂ ਲਈ ਸਜੀਵ ਹਨ।
c) How does the poet feel when he touches and feels the pages of his books?
ਜਦੋਂ ਕਵੀ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਛੂੰਹਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ?
Ans. He feels love for the old refrains. ਉਹ ਪੁਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਤੁਕਬੰਦੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਪਿਆਰ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
C. Great verse, great thoughts, still stand the test
Of time that’s passing by so fast…
These good companions never fail
To give me joy, to nourish me.
We who love books will always be
The lucky ones, our minds set free.
a) According to the poet, what still stands the test of time?
ਕਵੀ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਖਿਆ ਤੇ ਹਾਲੇ ਵੀ ਕੀ ਪੂਰਾ ਉੱਤਰਦਾ ਹੈ?
Ans. The verses of poems and great thoughts in his old books still stand the test of time. ਉਸਦੀਆਂ ਪੁਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਵਿਚਲੀਆਂ ਕਵਿਤਾਵਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਤੁਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਮਹਾਨ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਖਿਆ ਤੇ ਹਾਲੇ ਵੀ ਪੂਰਾ ਉੱਤਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
b) What do you think the poet will always get from his good companions? ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੀ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹੋਂ ਕਿ ਕਵੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਸਾਥੀਆਂ (ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ) ਤੋਂ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਕੀ ਹਾਸਿਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹੇਗਾ?
Ans. He will always get joy and nourishment from his books. ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਅਤੇ ਪੋਸ਼ਣ ਹਾਸਿਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹੇਗਾ।
c) Who according to the poet will always be the lucky ones? ਕਵੀ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਕੌਣ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਖੁਸ਼ਕਿਸਮਤ ਰਹਿਣਗੇ?
Ans. Those who love books will always be the lucky ones.
